(GREATER SUDBURY, ON) – Returning home to Cambrian College after a road trip that saw them earn their first victory of the season, the Sudbury Cyclones OPL3 Women’s team looked to carry that momentum into a challenging matchup against the first-place Woodbridge Strikers on Saturday afternoon.
The Cyclones got off to a strong start on home turf as leading scorer Kiara Levac found the back of the net in the 12th minute, recording her fourth goal of the season to give Sudbury an early 1-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Strikers capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute to level the match at 1-1. The two sides continued to battle throughout the remainder of the first half, with the score remaining tied heading into the break.
Woodbridge came out strong in the second half and took its first lead of the match with a goal in the 55th minute. Despite trailing, the Cyclones continued to push forward in search of an equalizer while receiving several key saves from goalkeeper Noemie Bouchard to keep the game within reach. The visitors would add an insurance marker in the 74th minute, extending their lead to 3-1. Although Sudbury continued to compete until the final whistle, the Woodbridge Strikers ultimately walked away with the victory.
Looking to bounce back, the Cyclones will hit the road this weekend for a matchup against Vaughan SC. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, at 3:00 p.m.
