(Greater Sudbury, ON) – The Sudbury Cyclones are ready to ignite their 2025 season with high-stakes matches in the opening round of the League1 Cup this weekend. Both the Women’s and Men’s squads will be in action, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead.
The Cyclones Women’s team travels to Oakville on Saturday, April 12th, for a 1:00 PM showdown against Rush Canada Academy. The matchup will mark the first official fixture of the season and a critical opportunity to make club history with a maiden Cup victory. Rush Canada and the Cyclones both debuted in League1 Ontario last season. In 2024, Rush Canada’s Women’s team finished with a 3-5-10 record and reached the second round of the League1 Cup. A win for the Cyclones would secure a second-round matchup against FC London.
On Sunday, April 13th, the Cyclones Men’s team takes to the field in Toronto at 7:00 PM to face York United Academy. This match will be York United Academy’s first-ever appearance in the League1 Ontario system, as the official academy side of Canadian Premier League’s York United FC. The Cyclones are looking to improve upon last season’s early Cup exit—a narrow 1-0 loss to FC London. The Cup opener also serves as a dress rehearsal, as the teams will clash again in League1 Championship action on April 18th.
The League1 Cup, organized by League1 Ontario, adds a knockout tournament to the regular league schedule. This year, 26 clubs are competing in the Men’s Cup bracket, and 24 in the Women’s bracket.
As excitement builds for the season, fans are encouraged to follow the Cyclones on social media and join the surge by becoming season members. For just $140, membership includes access to all Cyclones home matches across three teams, a limited-edition gift, 15% off merchandise, and 30% off walk-up pricing. The Cyclones home opener is set for Friday, April 26th.
