(Greater Sudbury, ON) – League1 Ontario has begun rolling out awards for the 2025 campaign, with Sudbury Cyclones goalkeeper Connor Vande Weghe being named League1 Championship Goalkeeper of the Year.
Instrumental in the Cyclones clinching promotion with a second place finish, Vande Weghe was a leader on the pitch. The captain of the club, Vande Weghe recorded five clean sheets throughout both Cup and League play, cementing himself as the top keeper of the Championship.
Connor’s impact on the game both through actions and leadership was unparalleled, leading to him also being named a finalist for MVP of the Year, along with Whitby FC striker Nigel Buckley, and Unionville Milliken SC attacker George Akpabio.
Connor is not the only Cyclone still up for an award, as head coach Giuseppe Politi is a finalist for Coach of the Year, along with Unionville Milliken SC head coach Donovan Taffe, and Whitby FC head coach Ramin Mohammadi. Politi was the club’s inaugural head coach in 2024, and has led the Cyclones to two straight promotions, the first head coach in League1 Ontario to do so.
The Sudbury Cyclones and the SWSE family would like to congratulate Connor Vande Weghe, Giuseppe Politi, and the rest of the Cyclones squad and staff for their accomplishments this season, as we can’t wait to Surge As One in 2026 as a League1 Premier club.
Cyclones academies are back for the U14-U20 group. With the first training session on Saturday, November 15th from 7-9pm at the Lancer Dome, stay tuned for more information in the coming days about the full schedule and registration.
