(GREATER SUDBURY, ON) – It was a busy weekend for the Sudbury Cyclones OPL3 Women’s side as they hosted back-to-back matches, taking on Scrosoppi FC on Saturday before welcoming Richmond Hill SC on Sunday.
The Cyclones came out flying in Saturday’s contest, taking control early as leading scorer Kiara Levac opened the scoring in just the sixth minute with her fifth goal of the season. Sudbury doubled its advantage in the 37th minute when Kynlee Cresswell found the back of the net for her second goal of the campaign, giving the Cyclones a commanding 2-0 lead. Just before halftime, Scrosoppi capitalized on a late opportunity in stoppage time to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the break.
The late goal did little to slow the Cyclones’ momentum. Sudbury opened the second half on the front foot, and their pressure paid off when Victoria Duraes scored her first goal of the season to restore the two-goal cushion. The Cyclones remained organized defensively for the remainder of the match, securing an impressive 3-1 victory.
With little time to celebrate, the Cyclones returned to the pitch less than 24 hours later to face Richmond Hill SC. The opening 45 minutes were evenly contested, with both sides creating quality chances but neither able to break the deadlock, sending the match into halftime scoreless.
The second half brought plenty of action, as Richmond Hill broke through in the 71st minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Cyclones responded in the 80th minute when Kiara Levac continued her impressive form, scoring for the second consecutive match to even the score at 1-1. As the match appeared destined to end in a draw, Richmond Hill found a dramatic winner in stoppage time, handing the Cyclones a hard-fought 2-1 defeat.
The Sudbury Cyclones OPL3 Women’s side returns to action on Saturday, July 18th, when they remain at home to host Burlington SC at Cambrian College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
